The long awaited premiere of award winning short film Watu Wote in Kenya finally took place at Century Cinemax Junction on Tuesday, 23rd January 2018. The premiere which coincided with the 2018 Academy Awards nominations announcement happened only hours after the short film was nominated for an Oscar award in the Live Action Short Film category.
Watu Wote cast and crew, Kenyan filmmakers, artists, fans and dignitaries came out in large numbers to support and celebrate the short film which has won more than 40 awards since its official release in 2016. Among those in attendance were the Kenya Film Commission chairman Chris Foot, the Kenya Actors Guild Chairman Chris Kamau and German Ambassador to Kenya, Jutta Frasch. In his speech, KFC Chairman Chris Foot said that the government is doing everything it can to support the Kenyan film industry which has shown tremendous growth over the years.
The German team led by Watu Wote director Katja Benrath and producer Tobias Rosen was also in attendance. Watu Wote which stars Kenyan actor Adelyne Wairimu as the lead tells the true story of the 2015 Mandera bus attack by Al Shabaab terrorists.
Following its nomination, the 22-minute film now stands a chance to win an Oscar Award come 4th March 2018 when the Academy Award winners will be announced.
